Discuss the Secret Message of Jesus

Hey friends,

Last month up/rooted got together as Kristine led us in a brainstorming and discussion session on new models for thinking about the church. We compared and contrasted the attractional-dualistic-heirarchical model of church with an approach that is incarnational-messianic(wholistic)-apostolic. It was a fruitfull discussion, especially for me personally as I was able to take a lot of the concepts back to our church plant and use them to help our Vision Team acquire a more unified vision for the kind of church we want to be.

I apologize for not getting a fuller summary out this month, life gets in the way sometimes. I guess it's too late now, as I wouldn't be able to remember too many of the details of our conversation anyway. But anyhow, I did want to remind you all that up/rooted is meeting again this coming Monday, June 19 from 7-9pm. Since it's summer time now and warmer we've decided to change our meeting location (again) back to Wheaton College, and specifically the patio in front of the Stupe/Beamer Center. That way we can sit outside if it's nice, and we can always move inside if it gets rainy, cold or dark. I hope that works for everyone.

We'll be discussing together Brian McLaren's new book, The Secret Message of Jesus (you can read a sample chapter here). If you have it, read it. If you've read it, skim over it again. If you don't have it, buy it and read as much of it as you can before Monday. As you read jot thoughts and questions down in the margins, then come to up/rooted on Monday to discuss the following questions:

  • What did you like best?
  • What didn't you understand?
  • What didn't you agree with?
  • What seems most relevant to your life?
  • What questions does this book raise for further study or discussion?

Hope you can make it! See you there!

Blessings,

Mike Clawson

I'm planning on attending. Will it be a Wheaton College or is it going to be changed?

Sorry, I didn't see your comments until after this past Monday. North Park, unfortunately, is a little far for most of our people to come since a lot of us are still in the west suburbs. Though if you're up that way maybe you'd want to restart the up/rooted.north branch?

hey everyone,

I've not been around much lately, but I have just met someone in Wicker Park who is thinking about starting a cohort of sorts in "City" which would be much nearer to North Park. I'll try and keep you all posted.
